The Moonlight Sonata by Yiannis Ritsos
In 1956, the poet Dimitris Doukaris, a friend of Ritsos, went to the Athenian house of the poet Melissanthi to express his condolences for the death of her husband. When the time came to take his leave, the woman told him that she would accompany him to the endo of the street.
And then another street, and another, until they arrived at his house. Then she went back.
The street was uphill. As she reached the top of the hill, her mourning-clad silhouette was oulined against the rissing full moon.
This simple anecdote that Doukaris told hid friend gave rise to this poetic monologue, one of the most beautiful ever written.
